Our neighbor (who is a contractor) confirmed that we can make a header of 2-2x10s with a layer of plywood between to span the new kitchen openings. Yippee! No costly engineered beam for us.
And because I should be studying for structures, I drew a section of that beam <--- so that I feel like it was studying.
We should be able to do this within the next two weeks. Hopefully.

I was surprised at this fun little fact too! A heads up that a good book that has lots of tips like this is in "A Graphic Guide to Frame Construction". I even got the spiral bound one so it can be easily used on the job. :-)
