The Littlest Renovators

11/23/08

I have no shame. I've reached a point in this renovation that I have no problem with child laborers. Case in point:

He can't even see! But hey at least we gave them masks (still can't be good for them.)
They thought they were coming over to watch OSU beat the crap out of Michigan. Go Bucks. Little did they know I'd have them working before they could even get out of their PJs.

Little fingers are good at cleaning out those little holes too. (I would like everyone who knows their mom to notice how D is sticking his tongue out while vacuuming. Where did he ever get that from?) We did give the little guy a break to test out "his door" aka the secret cabinet hole, but then it was back to sanding for him! Wax-on, Wax-off!

Good news: with their help, we should be painting my Tuesday. Just in time for the cabinets and appliances to arrive!

  1. Rent a sprayer! You'll love it. Just mask well. Get a respirator and good goggles too.

    It helps.

The time you'll save is amazing.

    And it's fun.

  2. We actually rented a sprayer for the fireplace. I really think it is a wash considering all the taping and masking off of things we'd have to do. We have 7 lights and 4 speakers, plus the solatube lights, 4 windows and 4 door openings all to tape and mask! Ugh!

  3. Well, we have about 80 can lights, 5 smoke detectors, two fire places, 25 windows, a million plugs and switches, plus some other fixtures and I'd still do it again.

Granted, we didn't have anything else in the place except a pile of trim and leftover dry wall.

While it was a lot of masking, I considered it a worthwhile trade off. Then again, the wife is fast on the windows. I'm much slower. I think there's a knack to masking. Also, you can make a paint block out of card board or 1/4 osb and use that to protect windows and the like from overspray. That was a good trick that allowed me to get really close to windows and the like.

The trick for me was using a higher quality self priming paint, and just giving it two good coats.

Stuff can lights with newspaper or grocery bags (plastic is ok if they are a little snug and won't blow out). Plastic around the switches and outlets helps too.

I'm thinking that there's a better way than newspaper for windows, as that took a lot of time. Maybe butcher paper and cutting several pieces at once?

I remember painting my grandmother's house by hand a few years ago, and it was a pain. We had four people working on it and while it was small, I recollect that it took a 2 weekends for us to complete. And it was pretty hard work. Now, I know I'm tougher these days, but I'd rather spray than roll any day by my recollection. Of course, some folks really like rolling paint too. It's a zen thing. I like lots of visual work getting done fast. The feeling of looking over your shoulder and seeing all that wall painted is wonderful. I loved that when I sealed driveways during the summer too.

    Sincerely,

Your local dejected Michigan grad. :-(
