De-pooping the Attic

12/2/10

After reading this post from 3 acres & 3 thousand square feet and this post from Russet Street Reno, it really reminded me how badly we need to re-insulate our attic. The house has been staying pretty warm, but the really cold weather is still ahead of us.

Sadly, unlike the two renovating couple above, we have a bio-hazard in our attic. The previous owner left the attic windows either open or with broken panes for a while, so there is bird crap all over the nasty old cotton batt insulation. GREAT. So we have to clean this up before we can put the new insulation down. Bring on the off-site babysitter, hepa-filter masks and Devo suits.

We are going to try to at least buy the insulation before the end of the year to take advantage of the tax credit.
Now, let me hunt for a photo of the attic. Oh crap. I can't find my hard drive. Just another day in the life of a scatter-brained new mom, DIY renovator.

If I remember tonight, I'll try to add some pics!

  1. Good luck! An attic full of bird crap how fun. At least you'll be saving energy and money. On average insulation has the shortest return on investment of any energy saving thing you can do to your home. Which state are you guys located in again? I could let you know what R-value ASHRAE recommends in your area. The code is right here on my desk...

  2. Ha I guess I should have remembered to check back yesterday while I was still at work!

Anyway, I'm back today and it looks like your a zone 4A. So standard 90.1 recommends an R-38 to be considered energy efficient. It's not code for residential buildings just a recommendation. Have fun with that nasty sounding task!

  3. I'm just catching up on your blog...we added a ton of blown-in insulation to our attic in October. Between the new windows last year and the new insulation this year, I'm looking forward to seeing how much our energy bills change. (Yeah, I know how dorky that makes me sound...)
