When my parents recently renovated their kitchen, my dad discovered an 11 year old bag of chips. My mom's response? "Those are probably still good." Then there was the oatmeal of which we will not speak. My mom is 12 cats away from an episode of Hoarders. (Love you Mom!)
The petrified apple doesn't fall far from the tree because my sisters and I had a little Hoarders contest of our own this week:
Third Prize
Missy with the ground cayenne red pepper with a best by date of 02/07/2006.
Let it be noted that Missy has moved 5 times since '06.
Second Prize
Me with the cornstarch with a date of December 2004.
Let it be noted that I have moved 4 times since '04.
Grand Prize
Heather with the cinnamon with the date of December 16, 1998.
Let it be noted that Heather has moved at least 6 times since '98.
Holy nomads right? I know that most people have outdated spices, but to have them survive thru SIX moves? Pretty incredible. In my Mom's defense she hasn't moved all in the last 11 years.
What about you? Dare you to look in your cabinets!

This cracks me up. When I was staying with my brother a couple summers ago, I cleaned out his kitchen and laughed when he had things expired from before he moved. I thought to myself "who does this?" and now I know. Now, I know.... ;)
ReplyDeletehaha. if that was my dad's ex, she would have tried to bring it to a potluck (or maybe freeze then bring to potluck at some future date!)
ReplyDeletewhen I helped my mom move (after 20+ yrs in one house...) you can only imagine treasures that we found. College memorabilia from my sister (who has kids in college)? check. outdated spices? check. coupons and receipts older than I? check.
I've totally moved old food too! Although, when you are packing to move, you don't necessarily have a ton of time to go through stuff... unless you are one of those people who does things early ;-)
ReplyDeleteI should mention when we cleaned out my Mom's Mom's house, we found a maxi pad with the belt. It was one of the best days of my life!
ReplyDeleteWhen I cleaned out my grandmother's pantry a couple years ago, I found canned goods and homemade preserves back to 1967!! Some of them had evolved into truly interesting organisms.
ReplyDeleteAbout a year ago my wife had grabbed a can of whip cream out of the frige and shot several blobs into her mouth before she looked at the expiration date from 5 years prior. I guess that why she said it didn't taste right.
ReplyDeleteThis is so me, I have crap from three houses and 5 years ago. Yikes!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I'm not the only one! My dd's school had a can goods drive last week so I was going through my pantry. Ummm, several cans that were dated '07 & '08. They got tossed. When I grabbed my poultry seasoning for the stuffing I was making last night, I noticed the date was 12/1/07. I just checked a few other spices in my cabinet after reading this post ... OMG!! ... They're so old they don't even have expiration dates on them. Thanks for the incentive to do some more tossing!
ReplyDeleteMy husband found spices in our spice cabinet from the 1950's. I'm under 40, but my house has been in the family since then (and undergone several renovations). I removed the spices from the cabinet and display them in our kitchen now.
