What is French for Chopsticks?

3/2/12

Ever since I read this article from Design Mom about how French 2 year-olds eat with  knife and fork, I've been wondering if I don't challenge Franca enough at the dinner table.

Don't get me wrong, the girl is an amazing eater (fish, kimchi, banana peppers, salami, espresso foam (bad Daddy), etc.) and she always says "please" and mostly says "thank you".

But I started to let her to do other things: put on her coat, drink from cup not a sippy, wipe her own face. I say let because she is thrilled to do it. "Me do it!" "I do it!"  are her new favorite phrases.

For her birthday, a friend got her a cutlery set that included a knife and we decided to let her use it. It is amazing. She uses a knife and fork to cut and eat her food better than I do!

So tonight while we were eating homemade shrimp and veggie tempura, she asked for "sticks". I gave her some, but she was struggling. Then, I remembered seeing a trick. A quick iPhone google search and run upstairs to fetch hair ties later and I had fashioned this:

DIY Kid's Chopsticks

And she went crazy.

Check out this hilarious video too:

Here is the recipe for you. Pretty messy, but very easy! I don't normally make anything fried, let alone feed it to Franca, but as you can see, she was taking the shrimp and veggies out of the breading anyway!

I did red peppers and zucchini too.
Obviously, we need to be more consistent because there she is drinking from a sippy not a cup at the dinner table. So now I'm trying to think of more things to let her do by herself. Suggestions? What did your kids love to do? What did you expect of them at 2?

  1. pat the bunny? (haha) Seriously, if you want to really challenge Franca, think about introducing reading and sign language over the next year. My mom grew up in a region where school starts at age 4 and many parents there introduce basic reading skills during the year (or more, yikes!) before. And anytime kids get a chance to learn a second language, it really helps brain development.

    1. Great idea. She already knows a little sign language and can recognize letters. I speak German, so I'll look into that. I'd love to brush up on it anyway! Great suggestions!
