So This Happened:

4/23/12

Going down a 3-1/2 foot inflatable slide at a BBQ Festival on Saturday. Buckle fracture in tibia and fibula. Ugh. I've been feeling horrible about it, but just about have myself convinced it was a freak accident. Being a parent is REALLY hard sometimes and I'm not even the injured one!

Temp cast.

She's doing ridiculously well. It doesn't hurt and she is acting completely normal. Kids are amazing. If you ask her where she has boo-boo is she will point to the 2 small scratches on her other leg (from who knows what), and even when pressed to find more will not identify her leg as an injury. Crazy!

We went today to get her real cast on and had a heck of a time picking a color. Pink and blue? Red? Purple? She finally settled on blue and kept trying to convince the nurses to cast the other leg too.

Can you tell she has painted her toenails purple right before this happened? Nice.

She has to wear it for 5 weeks, but doesn't have any restrictions. I'm SO happy for that, because she's been trying to walk/crawl already! Another great thing is that her normal pants fit right over the cast.

The nurses gave her a shoe and told us to cover the cast completely, otherwise the fiberglass rubbing would ruin our hardwood floors. I never would have thought of that. I love nice nurses!

So send some fast healing thoughts our way, we'd appreciate it!

p.s. I now officially hate BBQ. ;)

  1. Oh no!!! Poor baby! How the heck did that happen? Don't worry - we all have one of those "incidents". Mine was an 18 month old who took a header down the stairs. There was blood. A lot of it.

Sending good thoughts your way - at least she doesn't seem all that bothered by it and isn't in pain. Don't worry mama - she won't even remember this :)

  3. I bet this is waaay more traumatic for you than Franca! Thank goodness the cast will come off before summer heat hits. Sending thoughts of healing your way ;-) [btw google says the most common cause of this injury is falling on outstretched arms... sounds like it happens a lot]

  4. Poor little one, too cool that it's not holding her back, though! She is so sweet.

  5. Poor baby! My girl had surgery on her feet when she was 9 months old and they put casts on both of her feet to protect the wounds. She was crawling around and trying to stand before the anesthesia even wore off! Kids are ridiculously resilient. She'll adjust to the cast before you do, and she'll be full speed ahead in no time flat!

  6. Yikes! I was one year old and tumbled down some steps, and spent my second birthday in the hospital. I (fortunately) have no memory of it, but I was basically in traction because it was a break high on my femur.

Glad she's taking hers in stride! (as it were...)

  7. Oh no!!!! Franca is a tough cookie though, so of course the cast will not deter her at all. She'll have fond memories of it :) I still blame my brother for his bed breaking my arm when I was two. I'm still convinced it was that damn bed's fault... :)

  8. Try not to feel horrible. it's a thing - slide mishaps. The NYT has an article on slide hazards.

    Get well soon Franca!

  9. OMG! Poor little girl, I'm so sorry. She seems like such a little trooper. Ironic that I just read the slide warning yesterday and forwarded it to all my girlfriends. Good luck momma, I'm sure 5 weeks will fly by too quickly just like all the other weeks seem to ;)
