Kitchen Dilemma

9/17/12

Ok, we have a little kitchen Dilemma and need your help.

Kitchen Window Dilemma Poll over here at top---------------------->

Original plan was a bench per this post.

Then we decided we wanted a counter top with cabinets under. (Option A)

Then we got 3/4 of the way done with that and realized it made a really nice window seat/bench. (Option B)

But wonder if we would regret not doing some sort of shelf, so we wondered about a 12" narrower shelf. This is ok, but makes a much less comfortable 12" seat. (Option C)

This is where you come in. Please vote.

I will be completely honest and say we are leaning toward window seat (Option B) because it is just so damn nice. See??

Thanks!

  1. i like the bench - option b. could you leave it like that for a little while and see how much you use it/like it? you could add the upper counter later if you found that you aren't using the bench and would prefer more counter space.

  2. Window seat looks great. What about connecting a hinged counter top to one of the side walls that you could flip up or down as needed? If that doesn't sound great, than I like the little shelf - Potted herbs would look great there.

  3. Stumbled across you a while ago and spent a little time poking through your archives - love it! you are making great progress. I wish I was as far along in my old house as you are. Liked A until I saw B. C seems like it would take away from the comfy sprawled out option you have with the seat - you would have to sit up straight. Agree with Katie that you could always try B and if you find that no one actually ever sits there you could add the counter.

  4. Personally I like the window seat (so that's how I voted) - but I don't know how you cook. Do you cook large meals every day or only once in a while? Do you make a huge mess or clean up as you go?

Not sure option C is a good compromise - 12" shelf would not be terribly useful as counter space and it makes seating less desirable.

If you really need the counter space - go with option A.

If you can use the window seat as counter space (maybe not active working space since it is lower but useful for setting things on & spreading out) - go with option B.

If you want the shelf and the window seat - think about what you'll really use the shelf for - 12" is overkill if potted herbs is your goal. And as Katie noted, you could add a shelf over the window seat later.

Hope this helps the thought process!

    1. 12" is overkill for plants, but is right for putting books under. It just makes the bench so narrow.

  5. I was leaning towards window seat even before I saw the pics, but the pics at the end seal the deal - window seat for sure!

  6. I think you could do both. Instead of a narrow shelf, install a ledge all the way around (the sides of the tall cabinets and under the window sill). Then you can add an upper shelf when you need it, like for a buffet at parties or when you are doing a massive Christmas cookie baking, etc, but store that shelf somewhere most of the time so you can enjoy your window seat! A pillow on each end would hide the ledge and make it comfortable to sit on.

    1. I like this idea a lot, but the ledge does make me nervous. I'm thinking if we decide we need more counter top space later, we can add it to be remove-able AND self-supporting? Time to start sketching.

  7. I love the bench so my vote is for option B! =0)

  8. what about little shelves going up one side of the tall cabinets? you could store smaller items like canisters and even smaller appliances on them. i also like kristin's idea of a ledge with a removal shelf.

  9. My vote's mostly for a bench-only, but if the light fixture doesn't get in the way, you could also put a shelf up high, above the windows. Would only work for smaller items or books (no plants) but might be helpful and would also still look balanced.

    1. That is what I thought too, but I measured it and to clear the top of the window the shelf would be too short for most of our books. Bummer.

  10. Kristen was definitely using her noodle! I like her idea of the removable shelf, it's a better compromise than C.

  11. It's nice to have a toddler-height countertop in the kitchen. And after a few years, when everyone's in grade school, you can go back and add your shelf.
